What is your image? While you probably know the kind of image you want to project, the one you intend may not be the image you actually communicate. To do a quick visual audit of your image, simply ask yourself what message each of the following conveys:
Your building, sidewalk and sign, as viewed from across the street. Your entrance and front window, including signs, mannequins or displays. Your parking lot, including parking spaces, walls and landscaping. The appearance of the interior of your store or office, including the reception area, counters, floors, walls, shelves, lighting and rest rooms. The look and the design consistency of your signs, letterhead, business card, invoices, delivery trucks, bags and mailing labels. The appearance of your employees, including sales, service and delivery staff as well as yourself.
According to economic development consultant Kent Burnes, the most common image problem businesses have is dirt. Dirty windows. Dirty floors. Dirty furniture or dirty merchandise. The good news, of course, is that this is an easy fix. Moreover, most other common problems are equally simple to remedy - requiring only fresh paint, different color schemes, better lighting, or new uniforms or smocks.
